CIPHER
Cipher is a new quartet bringing together four highly active voices on the Norwegian jazz scene: Erlend Kongtorp (saxophone), Andreas Svabø (bass), Emil Norman (drums) and Martin Nodeland (guitar). Their self-titled debut album, recorded at Neby Studios in Oslo in June 2025, presents a band built on deep musical familiarity, collective energy, and a shared curiosity for where the music can go.
Our debut album releases on the 18th of September. Our first single, Lean In, is out now!

The title Cipher hints at the band’s underlying idea: a kind of internal musical code developed through years of playing together in different constellations. The quartet draws on an intuitive understanding of each other’s phrasing, timing, and improvisational instincts. This shared vocabulary shapes not only how the music unfolds in performance, but also how the compositions themselves were written — specifically with this group’s interplay in mind.
Operating within the modern jazz landscape, Cipher balances melodic openness with rhythmic complexity and dynamic range. The music moves freely between explosive energy and introspective space, always driven by a strong sense of interaction between the four musicians.
While the album presents a wide range of musical expressions, it maintains a clear and cohesive thread throughout. Erlend Kongtorp’s “Shuffle” nods toward Brazilian jazz and retro fusion, while tracks such as “Napoleon” and “Dolphin Diver” surge forward with breathless uptempo swing, showcasing the quartet’s collective drive and virtuosity. In contrast, “The Hermits Hymn” allows time to slow down, opening a more reflective and atmospheric landscape.

Each member contributes original compositions to the album, creating a repertoire shaped by four distinct voices but unified by the band’s shared musical language. Rather than placing any one instrument at the center, saxophone, guitar, bass, and drums move fluidly between roles, forming an organic and constantly shifting dialogue.
Individually, the musicians are active across the Nordic and international jazz scene and have collaborated with artists such as Will Vinson, Petter Wettre and Bjørn Alterhaug. With Cipher, they bring together their experience in a project centered around curiosity, interplay, and the joy of making music together.
